BLOG: Help support — and advise — Commerce City police
A glance at the latest posts in Eye On Commerce City’s “In the News” section should be troubling to any of our city’s residents. “Police still searching for suspects in deadly Commerce City house party shooting"; “One injured in Commerce City shooting on Interstate 76”— you get the idea.
It’s a dangerous world, and our once-peaceful and tightly knit community hasn’t been able to avoid the crime wave that has hit Colorado.
The good news is Commerce City police are on the job — but they also need all of the community’s help in the crime fight. One way residents can help local law enforcement is of course by serving as its eyes and ears, especially when it comes to reporting suspicious activity. Another way everyday Commerce City citizens can pitch in is by volunteering to serve on the city’s Citizens Public Safety Advisory Board.
As reported recently by Eye On Commerce City’s Debi Stobie, the board currently has four openings that need to be filled. Service on the panel can make a real difference for public safety because citizen input is key to developing our city’s law enforcement strategy. The city’s webpage on the board offers a good summary of board duties:
The board is authorized to analyze and evaluate community expectations of police service delivery, increase citizen awareness by communicating with residents regarding police policy, operations and procedure, serve as a communication conduit for the community to the city on public safety matters, assess and recommend new strategies to improve public safety, review police policy and procedure and recommend changes to the city to achieve alignment with citizen expectations, and identify and advocate for needed resources to achieve public safety objectives.
It’s an important mission. Citizen engagement in the crime fight is a meaningful way to serve the community — and to keep it safer.
